So glad you’re here! Here’s some background about Annika and Hazel Designs (and her gardens):

Annika, owner of Hazel Designs in Bellingham; floral and landscape designer
  • Hi! I’m Annika (rhymes with Monica), the founder, artist, and one-woman force behind Hazel Designs, here in beautiful Bellingham WA. I love what I do and I feel so lucky each time I connect with a new client who reminds me how important and joyful this work is.

I have always been a botanical artist but as it often goes, it took me a while to figure out how to make that my work. I grew up off-grid in rural northern New York, studied dance and worked in gardens as a youngster, then earned a B.A. in Studio Art and Environmental Studies at Oberlin College. After a few years of travel and non-profit work I earned a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Washington, and ran my own landscape design-build company for 10 years in Seattle, WA.

From working on school gardens, community kitchens, trail crews, urban design teams, food co-ops, collaborative design projects, facilitation teams, urban homesteads, home remodels and even parenting— I bring everything I’ve ever learned to all of my projects, and I’m ever grateful for the insights.

I truly enjoy working with each client’s unique vision, and pour a lot of care and thought into each project. I also thrive on collaborative work, so I’m interested to see what we can produce when I join your team and we put our heads together.

Hazel Designs cutting garden in Bellingham, where I source flowers for bouquets
  • This is where I grow most of the flowers for my regular subscriptions, as well as many of our favorite blooms for wedding and event designs. Luckily there are also numerous other flower growers in the area, so I can order in buckets of the freshest flowers for any color palette imaginable. We are proud to grow with sustainable methods and these gardens are host to flocks of birds and swarms of various pollinators throughout the seasons.

You can get a regular sampling of the cutting garden when you sign up for the bouquet subscription. That’s a wonderful way to treat yourself or someone else to a regular does of seasonal beauty. I also give garden coaching sessions for people wanting to start their own cutting garden!

Hazel Designs is now based in Bellingham, WA and has been in business for 14 years. We started as a small design-build landscape company in Seattle, just my sister and I designing and installing residential landscapes. Since then we’ve relocated and the business has evolved to include floral design and flower growing, but I’ve intentionally remained small in order to stay creative, adaptable and available to my clients.

From those first days, my core philosophy has never wavered: I strive to connect people with their environment by developing a vibrant backdrop for their life to unfold. Rooted in that same philosophy, my floral designs become unique backdrops for landmark moments and celebrations while creating a sense of place with local and seasonal flowers.

I listen to each client’s story and optimize their design for ease of flow and natural beauty, making a place they will really love and care for over time. I tune in to details and micro-climates as well as to larger systems, views, experiences and long-range plans, and my design approach is mindful of all those living in your landscape: you, your kids, pets, the soil critters, birds, pollinators and everyone downstream. Planting schemes are often inspired by —and seek to highlight— the hardworking, resilient native plant communities of the Pacific Northwest.

There is solid science now to prove what I already know so well: that time spent in nature makes humans happier and healthier. I hope that my flowers bring you delight and a sense of well-being. The garden is a constant teacher and muse, as are the wilder places beyond, and the people I work with. We live in such a beautiful place, and I am constantly striving to celebrate that!

I acknowledge that we live and work on unceded Coast-Salish land, and pledge to raise awareness of this fact and take good care of the land for coming generations.
